Subject: Class C2 20 bedroom new build
Site: Upper Sheffield Road, Barnsley
Status: RIBA Stages: A-L Completed
Details: The proposed scheme was for a new 20 bedroom building within the grounds of an existing psychiatric rehabilitation facility. The client returned to us after we had collaborated in a successful regeneration of the existing buildings in ‘Phase I’ and now wished to add an extra building on the site. When the two existing buildings were originally built, another block had been approved as part of the planning application but unfortunately was never built. Our proposal was designed to sit on the approved footprint of the original scheme, as agreed with the local authority, however the client wished to add a large extension to the rear of the design to create an ‘L’ shaped floor plan, splitting the building into two wings. The layout follows the principles of the existing blocks on the site with the first floor predominantly en-suite bedrooms, and the ground floor containing a reception, visitor’s facilities, occupational therapy rooms and staff facilities. The elevations use the same principals and materials as the existing blocks to create a cohesive overall appearance for the three individual buildings.
