Appletree House

Subject: Refurbishment and part demolition of an existing class C2 care facility

Site: Frederick Street, Meadowfield

Status: RIBA Stages: A-L Completed

Value: £1,600,000

Details: The proposed design provided external elevation treatment and much needed internal refurbishment for a 26 bedroom female rehabilitation facility. The aim of the facility is to develop the residents life and social skills before their introduction back into society. The building originally contained 57 bedrooms and due to some demolition and layout changes, our proposals reduced this number to 26 en-suite bedrooms, all designed to meet the latest CQC standards. Our proposals and sub-divisions of the internal layout had to be carefully considered to take into account existing window locations to ensure minimal impact to the external fabric. The decision was agreed with the client to demolish the rear section of the building due to its poor state, thus allowing the garden space to be opened up for life-skills areas. The repair works to the existing walls and new elevational treatments were constructed in materials and details to soften and break-up the large areas of brickwork and to enhance the character of the area.
